MAGICAL ENCOUNTERS:
THE STRIPED MARLIN
November 15,
I
am in search of the striped marlin; what better
destination than
the Baja coast of Mexico. Each year the striped marlin
congregate near
Magdalena Bay to gorge on the abundant schools of pacific sardines
in an area around Thetis Bank.

As well as teasing up striped marlin for close
encounters with divers,
I hope to find balls of sardines being corraled and attacked by
schools of marlin from below and by frigate birds from above. I
look forward
to filming the sequence of bait ball acquisition by the marlins
and their consumption by the assembled variety of predators. How
do the
marlin synchronize their feeding and how do they interact with
other large oceanic predators, such as sailfish, dorado, sea lions
and
whales, all congregated to feast on the abundant food source…?
